Edinburgh indie bookseller brings literary legend Rebecca Solnit to Scotland’s Capital
Since opening its doors just three years ago, The Portobello Bookshop, based in the heart of Edinburgh’s seaside community, has built a reputation for hosting exciting, diverse and unique author events.
The independent bookseller continues to impress with its biggest event to date – a rare opportunity to hear acclaimed American writer, historian and activist Rebecca Solnit in conversation with award-winning journalist and author Chitra Ramaswamy at Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms later this month.
‘We are absolutely delighted that Rebecca Solnit will be coming to Edinburgh for a special evening event at the Assembly Rooms’ says Events Manager Euan Tait. ‘Solnit’s writing is loved all over the world and we are extremely lucky that she will be visiting Edinburgh this month to discuss her two most recent books, Orwell’s Roses and Recollections of My Non-Existence, which have been topping our non-fiction list at the bookshop,’ he explains.
‘There is always a great deal of interest in Solnit’s work and this event presents a rare opportunity to hear her talk about her books in person. Her appearances are few and far between, so this really feels like a special event,’ Tait adds.
Solnit is the author of 20 books covering feminism, Western and indigenous history, popular power, and social change. Considered one of the most important thinkers on the subjects of feminism, climate, politics and art, Solnit has been awarded numerous literary prizes and her work is translated worldwide. A contributing editor to Harper’s, she writes regularly for the London Review of Books and the Los Angeles Times. She lives in San Francisco.
Chitra Ramaswamy is an award-winning journalist and author. Her first book, Expecting: The Inner Life of Pregnancy, won the Saltire First Book of the Year Award. She is a TV critic for the Guardian and restaurant critic for The Times Scotland.
