There’s a new reason to visit Edinburgh’s vibrant Broughton Street. The Big Cheese, an independent artisan cheese shop, has officially opened its doors, bringing with it an irresistible collection of more than 50 carefully curated cheeses from Scotland, across the UK and continental Europe.
For anyone who loves discovering exceptional food, this is far more than your average cheese counter. Around half of the cheeses on the shelves can’t currently be found in any other speciality cheese shop in Edinburgh, making every visit an opportunity to uncover something new.
Alongside timeless favourites such as Isle of Mull Cheddar, Gubbeen, Parmesan and beautifully creamy Gorgonzola, you’ll find an ever-changing selection of artisan cheeses with real personality. Think varieties smoked over whisky barrel chips, washed in red wine or brandy, or infused with garlic, herbs and chilli – each one telling the story of the people and places behind its creation.
Owner Neil Cunningham has created the shop as a welcoming neighbourhood destination where customers can browse, taste and chat with passionate experts. Working alongside head cheesemonger Mia Cowie, who brings more than a decade of artisan cheese experience, the team is dedicated to championing independent cheesemakers and introducing customers to both celebrated classics and exciting new discoveries.
